NSCP Neglect Strategy 2018 – 2020

The neglect of children and young people is one of the most difficult areas within the child care and protection field to identify, assess and intervene in. The impact of neglect on children and young people can be enormous. Neglect causes great distress to children, leading to poor health, educational and social outcomes as well as being potentially fatal. Lives are destroyed, children’s abilities to make secure attachments are affected and their ability to attend and achieve at school is reduced. Their emotional health and wellbeing is often compromised and this impacts on their success in adulthood and their ability to parent in the future.

The Northamptonshire Neglect Strategy has updated been developed to ensure our workforce (including services that work with vulnerable adults) is able to recognise neglect and provide an effective response which will improve outcomes for children, young people and their families. Integral in the strategy is the identification and engagement of families at the earliest opportunity by preventative services, including effective assessment and development of a clear action plan.

Parent Info and Ceop

The government recently launched a website to support parents. The website has been developed with ParentZone and CEOP, the police command responsible for child exploitation and online protection. Parent Info is a collection of articles, tips, expert advice and resources designed to help parents keep up with what their children are doing on-line. For example, the site currently includes information about staying safe on minecraft, mental health, and building online resilience.

Other useful information

What is Radicalisation?

Radicalisation is the process by which a person comes to support terrorism and forms of extremism. During the process of radicalisation it is possible to intervene to prevent vulnerable people being radicalised.

Channel

Channel is a programme which focuses on providing support at an early stage to people who are identified as being vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism. It provides a ‘channel’ for schools to make referrals if they have a concern.

Prevent

At NPAT we want to support our children and families from being drawn into terrorism, becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism or extremism in any form or guise. As a Trust, there is no place for extremist views of any kind whether from internal sources; pupils, staff or governors or external sources' school community, external agencies or individuals. We recognise that extremism and exposure to extremist materials and influences can lead to poor outcomes for children. PREVENT is the prevention of children falling prey to radicalisation or extremism, and forms part of our Safeguarding Children approach.

Our pupils and staff should see our schools as a safe space to explore controversial issues safely and our teachers encourage and facilitate this to happen through their Personal, Social, Health, Education and wider curriculums.

The Trust aims to minimise the risk and prevent them from being drawn in. We ensure that all staff are PREVENT trained and are aware of the signs and indicators of radicalisation and extremist behaviours. We work closely with the police and other agencies where any concerns are raised. For support or advice please contact the NPAT offices at .
